Christian Purity for Singles: Breaking Ungodly Soul Ties

The Lord impressed upon my heart to write about purity from my perspective as a single Christian lady. We live in a world of sexual permissiveness and YOLO, so it can be difficult to maintain biblical purity standards. Notice I said “difficult”, but it is not impossible. I intend to publish a series of blog articles on this topic. However, the first requirement that I would like us to explore is breaking ungodly soul ties. So, let’s begin!

What Is A Soul Tie?

A soul tie is a deep spiritual and emotional connection to another individual. A soul tie can be good and to the glory of God. Examples of these would be the soul tie between a husband and his wife, or that between very good friends (like David and Jonathan in the Bible). However a soul tie can also be ungodly and lead you away from the will of God for your life. In this case sexual relations between unmarried persons, or demonic covenants would be clear examples of ungodly connections. I will not delve into the details of a soul tie, as many resources have done an excellent job of discussing the same. Now let’s consider the importance of breaking ungodly soul ties.

Breaking Ungodly Soul Ties Is Necessary for Purity

Soul Ties Are Illogical and Bad for You

An ungodly soul tie can leave make a person attached to another against any logical thought or even against the person’s true will. We all have a relative or a friend who has remained in a relationship that is completely toxic for them. We often wonder why this person can’t see what we see and just leave that person – for good! However, that’s how soul ties work. A soul tie acts as a bridge, a connection, an overwhelming urge to be with that other person. This is why a person who has been physically, sexually, emotionally, and financially abused keeps returning to his/her abuser. It’s a continuous cycle of breakup and makeup, which makes their lives worse. In extreme cases, a woman who refuses to leave her abuser can eventually lose her life in the process.

The Necessity of Breaking Ungodly Soul Ties

Therefore, breaking ungodly soul ties is a necessary first step to purity. Otherwise, it will be a matter of walking righteously before Christ for a little while, then that person comes back into your life, and it is back to a sinful lifestyle. Jesus Christ desires for us to walk in holiness before Him 24/7/12/366. The only way to do that is to completely cut off all connections to past sexual partners and sinful activities. It’s a hard process, but a necessary one that the Lord requires of us:

If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Matthew 5:29-30, NKJV

Now this doesn’t mean that we should self-mutilate. However, it does mean that if there is someone, something, or some place that causes us to sin, we need to cut off all ties. It doesn’t matter how much we value that person, thing, or place, or how much importance we attach to the same. We simply have to cut all ungodly soul ties.

Breaking Ungodly Soul Ties for Good!

My Testimony

I have been celibate for almost eight years (since January 2012). That’s a long time – I know! I had one “serious” boyfriend who the Lord clearly told me to break away from at the end of 2011. So, it was clear that I had to break this soul tie.  But a soul tie is not just formed through the act of sexual intercourse. Any highly sexual activity or any strong emotional connection can also generate a soul tie. So, through the leading of His Holy Spirit, the Lord led me to cut off all soul ties that came about from engaging in kissing and heavy petting with other young men as well. Praise Jesus, I am now free from all soul ties and walking in my divine purpose to the glory of my Daddy Jesus Christ!

Useful Steps To Break Ungodly Soul Ties

But, that’s enough about me. Now let’s talk about you. How do you go about breaking ungodly soul ties? There are a few steps that I found quite useful in this process that I would like to share with you:

Salvation in Jesus Christ

You must accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you must be filled with the power of the Holy Ghost¹ This will help you to be able to be in right standing with Christ and able to hear clearly from Him.

If you were a Christian before, and fell away into sin, repent and return to Jesus Christ. I had to confess my sins and ask Jesus to restore me back into right standing with Him. I also had to ask for my spirit and discernment to be revived by His Holy Spirit.

Break All Ungodly Associations and Identify the Breaches

End all existing relationship(s) that are not of God and are leading you to sin. Don’t keep any options open; don’t keep any windows, doors, or cracks open – just cut it off! Just end it all! Burn all bridges, delete numbers, delete emails, delete social media connections, delete photos, and just completely annihilate all possible routes for reconnection.

You must recognize the existence of these soul ties and how they were formed. I recommend that you ask Jesus to remind you of all previous relationships (or situationships) that have created ungodly soul ties in your life. You can also write down (in a secure, private place) the names of these persons and the ways in which each soul tie was forged. This will be helpful for the next stage.

Prayer, Fasting, and Immersing Yourself in the Word

Prayer and fasting are necessary for breaking ungodly soul ties. There is no way around it: prayer and fasting. It’s the only way I know, so it’s the only thing I can recommend. You must pair your prayers for breaking these soul ties with fasting. When you fast, you add a turbo charge to your prayers, so that is why prayer and fasting are essential for lasting deliverance. I also found the prayer manual Prayer Rain by Dr. Daniel Olukoya to be most helpful. It contains a series of prayers for different situations. I recommend that you be led by the Holy Spirit regarding the prayers that are applicable for your situation. Of course, you can also use other biblically sound resources.

In your prayers, you must verbally break all soul ties between you and each person by the power in the Blood of Jesus and the authority in the name of Jesus Christ. So for example you may say:

I [your full name] break all soul ties formed between myself and [say the person’s name] through [state the ungodly activity] by the power in the Blood of Jesus and the authority in the name of Jesus Christ.

You must also immerse yourself in the Word of God. It is the Word of God, your Bible that will give you the instructions for living in purity. I recommend that you find scriptures that encourage you to walk in holiness before the Lord. Simply Google “scriptures for sexual purity”. You will get many useful Bible verses to encourage you to walk in purity and freedom.

Flee Sexual Temptations

You must avoid traps that can lead to sexual immorality. It’s not just about saying that you’re walking in sexual purity, you must also be wise in avoiding situations that will tempt you and lead you into sexual sins. I will discuss more about fleeing sexual temptations in subsequent blog article.

Live Free and Pure as a Christ Ambassador!

After breaking ungodly soul ties, you must live according to biblical purity. It makes no sense to break past soul ties, only to go out and create more. This is a case of get free, stay free and live empowered in Jesus Christ. Remember that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We are that city that is set on a hill and cannot be hid. We are His ambassadors, so we must live like diplomats of the Eternal Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
