I was driving along one of the main thoroughfares in my city of Kingston, when I started to focus on a taxi cab. The traffic was moderate, but the driver of this cab kept switching erratically between the two lanes. He was desperate to get ahead of everyone else. He weaved crazily from one lane to the next, darting dangerously in and out of the flow of traffic – all minus the use of his indicator lights! I was becoming increasingly annoyed at the antics of this driver, when suddenly the Holy Spirit dropped James 1:8 in my heart: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” What does this have to do with our faith walk? The Conditions to Receive Godly Wisdom
I continued to ruminate on that verse and its context for the rest of my journey. The relevant segment of that chapter actually starts from the fifth verse and ends in the eighth. It starts out with the instruction that if one is lacking in wisdom, then that person should ask God for wisdom and it would be given. However we then see the conditions for receiving that request: complete faith and no wavering (or doubting).
The state of being double minded means to be indecisive. It also means switching back and forth between two (or more) thought patterns or beliefs. What are the perils of being double minded? The Bible tells us that a double minded person:
(a) does not receive his/her requests from God, and
(b) is unstable in every area of life.
This constant back-and-forth in thoughts and actions gives a person the reputation of being undisciplined and unreliable. Such an individual will not be able to delve into a deeper relationship with Christ, as they will always question their identity and purpose in Him. As a result, they cannot put on the mind of Christ (since they don’t really “know” Him). They also cannot walk in divine wisdom.
Divine Wisdom and Purpose
Without the wisdom of Christ, then they are unable to devise a plan of action and actually follow through in its execution. The result is that valuable time is lost in aimless activities, as blessings are bypassed. 1 The sad thing is that if this behaviour goes unchecked, then this individual never walks in his/her own divine purpose. Their actions will be guided only by their natural intellect, instead of faith in God for His supernatural blessings.
Let’s consider the elements of asking for, and receiving the will of God for our lives:
You Need the Wisdom of God in All Things
There are many scriptures which speak to the importance of wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to be guided by the Holy Spirit of God. It enables you to apply knowledge, understanding and experience (your own and that of others) to generate solutions and to create value in all areas of life. As you spend time with our heavenly Father and in His Word, you will receive more of His divine wisdom through His Holy Spirit. 2 As you grow in Christ and in His wisdom, you will also pray in accordance with His divine will for your life. 3
All Your Requests Must be Made in Faith
What is faith? We know that Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith means that we have confidence that we have received whatever it is we hope for – even when we don’t see it as yet. Furthermore from Hebrews 11:6, we know that if we lack faith, then we cannot please God. It is essential that we believe God exists and that He really loves us enough to reward us when we earnestly seek Him. Jesus gives us the assurance that He only gives us good gifts. Therefore, we should ask and believe that we will have our requests fulfilled. 4
You Must be Steadfast: Resist any Form of Wavering!
Why should you avoid wavering or doubting? Because doubt is the antithesis of faith. Faith tells us to go forth boldly in full assurance that Jesus will come through for us, while doubt tells us to run back to the familiar. Doubt pulls us from the will of God for our lives, while faith pushes us closer to the heart of our Father and to our divine purpose. I encourage you to press forward in unshakeable faith to the glory of God and for your good in Him.
I pray that you will receive divine strength to walk fully in faith, nothing wavering. May you have a burning desire and a deep hunger to spend more time with our Father and in His Word. I pray that you receive the wisdom of Christ. May your requests be aligned with the will of God and made in steadfast faith. I pray that you will stand still, in patient expectation, so that you will receive your requests of our Father in full measure. Amen.
Blessings, peace and wisdom upon you,
Sophia.
Amen. God gives wisdom without finding fault (James 1:5). I will therefore pursue His wisdom in all things.
